Botswana has recently unveiled a monumental discovery with the unearthing of a 2,492-carat diamond at the Karowe Diamond Mine, making it the second-largest diamond ever found globally. This significant find, announced by Lucara Diamond Corp, was made possible through advanced X-ray technology, which allowed for the intact recovery of the stone.
The diamond's size places it just behind the historic Cullinan Diamond, discovered in South Africa in 1905, which weighed 3,106 carats. This discovery reinforces Botswana's status as a leading diamond producer, with the industry being a crucial part of its economy. President Mokgweetsi Masisi showcased the diamond, emphasizing its importance for national development initiatives.
This remarkable find follows the previous record-holder from Botswana, the 1,758-carat Sewelo diamond, discovered in 2019. The recovery of such large and high-quality diamonds highlights the effectiveness of modern mining techniques and the potential for further significant discoveries in the region.
